AI Won’t Save Classrooms Without Empowering Teachers

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into classrooms from planning lessons to grading, AI is being used as a revolutionary tool for teachers. But here’s the thing, even with the use of AI  teachers are still drowning in work, under-supported and often left to figure it all out on their own.

In a recent Forbes article, Sarah Hernholm hit the nail on the head and she mentioned that AI in education is like glitter on a broken chalkboard if we don’t give teachers the tools, time and training they need to make it work. Yes, AI can be a game-changer but only if we use it the right way.

What’s Happening in Classrooms?

Let’s break it down:

  • Teachers who happen to be creators too, are expected to integrate AI into their lessons with no preparation at all. Imagine being handed a brand-new tool and being told to “figure it out” while juggling a million other responsibilities. That’s the reality for many educators right now
  • Most schools don’t even offer basic AI training so how are teachers expected to succeed with AI if we don’t set them up for success?

What role does AI play in Education ?

AI has the potential to transform education. It’s a tool that needs to be implemented ethically and strategically.

 Here’s what that looks like:

  • Hands-on training for teachers
  • Support for lesson planning & grading
  • Respect for teachers’ emotional labour

As Hernholm wisely puts it: “We need to empower teachers and not replace them.” And she’s absolutely right. Teachers are the heart of education and no algorithm can replicate the value they bring to their students every day.

What Can We Do About It?

If you care about the future of education, here are a few ways you can make a difference:

  • Advocate for teacher tech training
  • Celebrate success stories of the use of AI and use it to inspire others
  • Let’s stop pretending and realize that AI is not a teacher but a tool that works best when paired with human expertise and empathy.

Final Thoughts

It’s time to stop throwing new tech at old problems and calling it innovation. The future of education isn’t just about algorithms or fancy gadgets but it’s about people. Teachers deserve more than just tools, they deserve real support, respect and resources to thrive in their roles.

So let’s make it happen. Let’s champion educators and give them what they need to succeed not just for their sake but for the students who depend on them every day.
