Trust in AI: Can We Still Believe Online Content?

Trust in AI is becoming a topic of discussing across the web today. Imagine waking up to a world where every single headline, blog post, product review and even that heartfelt message from a brand might not be written by a human. Well, welcome to the era of AI where information is sourced out  fast and sometimes may be misleading.

In today’s world, artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we create and consume content and it’s harder to tell what is true and what is made up with AI tools steadily advancing.

Now the big question that is echoing louder than ever is: Can we still trust in AI? Can we still trust what we read online?

The Rise of AI

There’s no denying that AI has levelled up the content game since tools like ChatGPT can generate articles, answer questions, summarise research and even create images and code all in the blink of an eye.

But here’s the twist, AI doesn’t understand the truth. It mimics patterns based on what it’s been trained on. So if it’s seen enough incorrect information, it might repeat that confidently and this is where the term “AI hallucinations” enters the chat.

A recent study by MPG One discovered that GPT-4o has a factual accuracy rate of around 88.7% which sounds impressive until you realise that 1 in 7 responses may contain false or misleading information. This is not great especially when you’re dealing with sensitive stuff like medical advice, legal documents or financial planning.

Questioning Our Trust in AI

Back in the days, getting true information was easy because all you had to do was cite your sources and check for all facts responsibly but in this AI-saturated space, a few things have shifted, which are:

  • AI can generate fake images, voices and videos that are not realistic.
  • Many AI tools create references that sound scholarly but don’t exist.
  • Some news outlets are using AI to generate articles but the speed doesn’t equal accuracy.

A notable scandal unfolded in 2025 when a US health report allegedly reviewed by experts was found to contain fabricated citations generated by AI. The backlash was swift and the report was withdrawn, so yes even institutions are getting it wrong.

The Automation Bias Effect

In 2025, a study from MIT Media Lab revealed something called automation bias which is our tendency to trust in AI’s information more simply because it came from a machine.

You know that moment when an AI chatbot gives you a super confident answer and you just go with it? That’s automation bias in action. Now layer that with social media platforms that amplify engaging but not always accurate content and that’s how you keep getting misinformed.

The Impact on Creators, Brands & Entrepreneurs

As a writer, content strategist, entrepreneur or  digital marketer. Here’s how to stay on top of your game:

  • Always Verify Your Facts and Cross-check claims using reliable sources like academic databases or verified news sites.
  • Use AI for ideas, drafts and brainstorming but when it comes to final decisions, allow your human brain to take over.
  • Stay Updated on AI Ethics, regulations, ethical concerns and industry standards. It will help you create responsibly.
  • Use Fact-Checking Tools like Google Fact Check and let them be your digital detectives especially for anything important.
  • If you use AI to help generate content, be transparent about it. Trust in AI builds when your audience knows what’s real.

We All Have a Role to Play

Let’s be honest, AI isn’t going away. In fact, it’s just getting started. Governments and tech companies have a part to play, but so do you and me. Each time we question a source, check a claim or slow down to think before we share, we’re helping to protect our trust in AI.

So next time you read something online, ask yourself: Is it accurate or just very convincing? That one question could save you and others from being misinformed.

Can you put your trust in  AI?
