The other day we wrote about Meta launching new AI-powered Glasses in collaboration with Oakley, if you have not read that article it would be a good read after reading this one.
The parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp which is Meta Platforms Inc., has made a significant move into the smart glasses industry by purchasing a minority investment in EssilorLuxottica, the world’s largest eyewear producer for over $3.5 billion (€3 billion).
The stake equals just under 3% of EssilorLuxottica’s shares and was concluded on July 9, 2025 signalling a strengthening of the two companies’ collaboration.
The AI-Powered Eyewear Push
This investment is consistent with the company’s strategy plan to extend outside social media and speed up the development of AI-powered wearable devices. Meta and EssilorLuxottica have been working together since 2019, developing smart spectacles for classic brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley.Meta presently promoted Ray-Ban smart glasses with built-in cameras and AI assistants and it recently released a new Oakley-branded line that incorporates AI technology.
Future Growth and Industry Impact
Sources have indicated that the company is considering expanding its shareholding to roughly 5% over time although no final decision has been taken. The agreement demonstrates rising confidence in the general acceptance of smart eyewear which blends fashion and powerful AI capabilities. EssilorLuxottica CEO, Francesco Milleri had previously stated that Meta was interested in acquiring a stake and the completion of this transaction demonstrates the firms’ shared vision for the future of wearable technology.
Meta’s Broader AI Ambitions
This acquisition has also shown the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg’s greater focus on artificial intelligence is a key growth driver. As AI development becomes increasingly capital expensive, smart glasses provide Meta with a concrete consumer product to exhibit its AI advancements thereby putting the business at the forefront of the next generation of wearable technology.
