Zuckerberg Shakes Up AI World by Hiring Co-Creator of Open AI as Chief Scientist

The other day, we wrote about an article titled Mark Zuckerberg is building the most powerful AI Team at Meta and as of now, Meta has been pushing ambitiously and building the strongest team for the Meta AI Superintelligence lab.

Meta made a major move in the AI industry by naming Shengjia Zhao, the co-creator of Open AI’s ChatGPT as the chief scientist of its newly formed Superintelligence Lab.

This appointment signals Meta’s ambitious push to lead in advanced artificial intelligence research and development.

Who was the Co-creator of Open AI?

The Co-creator of Open AI is Shengjia Zhao, who is a renowned AI researcher. He played a crucial role in developing ChatGPT, GPT-4  and several mini models, including versions 4.1 and o3.

He also led significant work on synthetic data at OpenAI. Zhao holds a PhD in computer science from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University.

His work has been foundational in AI reasoning and scaling thereby making him a top expert in the field.

What Will Zhao Do at Meta?

Zhao who was the former Co-creator of Open AI but is now the chief scientist at Meta will set the scientific agenda and direction for Meta’s Superintelligence Lab.

He will work closely with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the company’s chief AI officer, Alexander Wang, leading a team dedicated to pushing boundaries in AI towards artificial general intelligence (AGI).

This lab operates separately from Meta’s existing AI research group FAIR, reflecting a strategic focus on foundational models and next-generation research.

Why This Matters

Zhao’s move is part of a broader talent shift from OpenAI and other leading AI organisations to Meta, as Zuckerberg aggressively invests billions in AI to close the innovation gap with competitors like OpenAI and Google.

The Superintelligence Lab aims to develop “full general intelligence” and plans to open-source its breakthroughs, sparking both excitement and debate in the AI community.
