Tesla has disbanded its AI Training Supercomputer named Dojo marking a major shift in its AI strategy.
This AI Training Supercomputer was designed to process vast amounts of video data from Tesla’s electric vehicles to train full self-driving (FSD) AI models and it will no longer be developed in-house.
The leader of the Dojo project, Peter Bannon has left the company, and about 20 employees recently departed to launch a new AI startup called DensityAI which was founded by former Dojo head Ganesh Venkataramanan alongside other ex-Tesla engineers.
Why was Dojo Shut Down By Tesla?
Elon Musk ordered the shutdown of these AI Training Supercomputers because he stated that it was unreasonable for Tesla to split resources across two distinct AI chip efforts.
Instead, Tesla plans to focus on its in-house AI chip development with upcoming AI5 and AI6 chips and it is expected to be manufactured by Samsung.
The company will increasingly rely on external partners such as Nvidia, AMD, and Samsung for computing and chip manufacturing needs moving forward.
