OpenAI forges chip & infrastructure alliance with Samsung + SK around “Stargate”

OpenAI recently formed key alliances with South Korean companies Samsung and SK Hynix to enhance its “Stargate” AI infrastructure plans.

Samsung and SK will increase advanced memory chip output. They’re also working on “Stargate Korea,” a projected AI data centre with SK Telecom, as well as research on floating data centres (to avoid land limits).

What This Means for Creators

Expect increased strain on the hardware and memory supply chains. If chip scarcity tightens, your AI experiments may encounter latency or cost bottlenecks.

This serves as a reminder that control over computational infrastructure will be strategically vital. You’ll have more flexibility if you can design lean solutions that span many providers.

Also, think worldwide. Local developers may be able to connect to regional “Stargate” nodes as OpenAI expands its infrastructure.

What this mean for entrepreneurs

Infrastructure-as-a-service still has potential. The fact that OpenAI is forming collaborations indicates that computation and memory will remain leverage points.

Keep an eye out for innovative data centre concepts (floating, modular, and distributed) that may lower entrance barriers in areas with limited land or power.

As OpenAI expands vertically, auxiliary services (cooling, power routeing, and interconnects) may become new niches to carve out.
