Apple is Building a ChatGPT Rival to Improve iPhone’s AI Ahead of iPhone 17 Launch

Apple is stepping up its game in artificial intelligence by quietly developing its own ChatGPT-style AI chatbot to enhance the iPhone’s AI capabilities.

This new initiative comes as a surprise while we prepare for the highly anticipated launch of iPhone 17 in 2026. 

The New iPhone ChatGPT Style AI Chatbot 

According to reports, Apple has formed a dedicated team known as “Answers, Knowledge and Information” (AKI) tasked with building an AI “answer engine” that is capable of responding to queries using information from across the web.

This chatbot aims to deliver swift, accurate responses and could be integrated deeply into Apple’s ecosystem including Siri, Spotlight and Safari, thereby providing users with smarter and more conversational search experiences.

The project represents a major shift in its AI strategy, focusing on embedding AI seamlessly within the operating system rather than relying solely on partnerships or third-party AI like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

A Focus on Integration and Privacy

Rather than launching a standalone chatbot app, Apple intends to enhance its existing tools with this AI system, enriching daily user interactions with more personalised and context-aware responses.

The company continues to prioritise user privacy, seeking to differentiate itself through on-device AI processing combined with cloud services in a hybrid model.

Leadership for the team reportedly falls under Robby Walker, a former head of Siri, with Apple actively recruiting AI researchers skilled in search algorithms and engine development to accelerate progress.
