Europe is stepping up. The European Union aims to double Horizon Europe’s AI funding to over €3 billion annually.
Along with that, the EU revealed two policies, “Apply AI” and “AI in Science”, to accelerate the use of AI in industry and research, particularly in underserved sectors.
Meanwhile, it’s extending its network of “AI Factories”, financed by a €2.6 billion commitment.
What this means for creators
More European funding translates into additional grant or partnership options for AI research in your region. Keep your ear to the ground when taking calls.
There is likely to be new demand and incentives if your audience or product is related to “science, biotech, environment, climate, and engineering”.
Expect additional infrastructure, computation, data access, and model tooling to become available (or subsidised) in Europe. This lowers the barrier to entrance.
What this means for entrepreneurs
It’s a signal that Europe isn’t taking a step back; rather, it’s building. If you are an AI founder in Europe, you now have geopolitical support.
You can use public funds as part of your capital mix. However, don’t rely solely on grants; balance with VC or revenue.
The urge to “apply AI” suggests that areas that have not yet been touched by AI (manufacturing, logistics, agriculture) may become the next fight. Be prepared to enter them early.
