GitHub CEO Warns Developers to Embrace AI or Quit Coding

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has issued a stark warning to software engineers worldwide.

He stated that they should learn to work with artificial intelligence or risk being pushed out of the industry.

In a recent blog post titled “Developers, Reinvented,” Dohmke highlighted how AI is not just a future possibility but a present reality that is changing the very nature of software development.

The Changing Role of Developers

Based on conversations with 22 developers who extensively use AI tools like GitHub Copilot, the GitHub CEO has explained that many developers have transitioned from coding line-by-line to becoming “code enablers” or “creative directors of code.”

Instead of manually typing every piece of code, developers now guide AI systems, set contexts and carefully review AI-generated outputs to ensure quality and accuracy.

The GitHub CEO also highlighted that this shift is less about doing less work and more about doing different, higher-level work that leverages AI’s strengths.

Tasks previously considered too complex or time-consuming, such as large-scale code restructuring or coordinating multiple AI agents to build new features are now becoming more feasible.

How would Developers Adapt To This Change

The GitHub CEO warned that the pace of change is rapid, with some developers estimating that AI could write up to 90% of code within the next two to five years.

Those who do not adapt by learning how to architect systems, manage AI workflows, and ensure quality control risk being left behind.

Echoing this sentiment, Julia Liuson, a senior Microsoft executive and part of GitHub’s parent company, recently stated, “using AI is no longer optional.”

Although some view this as pressure, it underscores the urgency tech leaders place on embracing AI.

A New Model for Software Development

GitHub CEO’s message suggests that understanding AI integration is becoming essential.

Rather than reducing the value of developers, AI expands what’s possible.

With AI as a collaborator, creative problem solving, ambitious projects, and faster delivery are now achievable.

The GitHub CEO also acknowledged that this new role may not appeal to everyone. However, he pointed out that developers have always worked in layers of abstraction and today’s shift simply raises the level, moving from code written by hand to instructions given to AI agents.

By embracing this change, developers can “move faster, aim higher, and tackle challenges that once seemed impossible,” making AI a powerful partner rather than a threat.
