A subtle disagreement has evolved between two of the most prominent names in artificial intelligence, Microsoft and OpenAI, and it revolves around the future of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The crux of the issue is a clause in their contract that could prevent Microsoft from using OpenAI’s AGI once it becomes a reality. While Microsoft wants the clause removed, OpenAI is apparently sticking firm.

This issue between Microsoft and OpenAI is more than just a minor stumbling block; it has the potential to shatter the foundations of one of the world’s most significant AI alliances. Since 2019, Microsoft has poured billions of dollars into OpenAI, supporting everything from cash financing to the cloud infrastructure that powers ChatGPT and other tools through Azure.
Although both businesses issued a joint statement reiterating their long-term commitment, insiders indicate OpenAI’s transition to a public-benefit organisation remains on hold. As OpenAI gets closer to reaching AGI, its influence over governance may constrain Microsoft’s capacity to monetise such advances, creating serious concerns about the future balance of power in AI.
