Microsoft moves to pay content creators via “Publisher Content Marketplace”

Microsoft is developing a Publisher Content Marketplace (PCM), a platform for compensating creators and publishers whose work feeds AI models.

Initially, only a few publishers will participate in the experiment, but Microsoft intends to gradually extend access. The rationale is as follows: if AI is using content, content creators should have a stake.

This occurs at a time when there are heated discussions over who “owns” training data and how inventors are credited (or compensated).

What This Means for Creators

You may finally get better leverage when your content is used in AI training. Microsoft’s move could set a standard.

If Microsoft’s experiment proves successful, it might create a new revenue source (especially if your content is of high quality, niche, or in demand).

However, don’t expect universal access right away; it will begin selectively and gradually grow.

What does this mean for entrepreneurs

If you create tools that rely on web content or media, the economics may change. You might need to budget for content licencing.

There is an opportunity: you could create tooling to assist creators in registering, tracking, and monetizing their usage in AI systems.

Also, Microsoft’s approach may encourage others (Google, Meta, OpenAI) to follow suit, thereby changing the laws of AI content supply.
