The UK Government has unveiled a major push to position Britain as a global AI powerhouse, confirming a new AI Growth Zone in North Wales, a move expected to bring over 3,400 new jobs to the region and unlock up to £100 billion in additional investment across the country.
The announcement, made by the Prime Minister and the Technology Secretary, sets out a bold plan: build dedicated hubs where AI development, energy infrastructure, planning reform, and local skills investment work together to accelerate the country’s AI economy.
What Exactly are AI Growth Zones?
AI Growth Zones are intended to be specialised hubs where everything required to produce sophisticated AI; from high-power computers to research expertise to supporting planning guidelines, is available in the same location.
Consider them “AI industrial estates” where innovation is not hampered by grid constraints, sluggish planning clearances, or a shortage of skilled workers. Instead, they are designed to assist AI startups to form, scale, and employ quickly.
The new North Wales zone will consist of two locations: Prosperity Parc in Anglesey and a second facility at Trawsfynydd, forming a cross-regional technology corridor.
Why North Wales?
North Wales already has a thriving technology sector, but this announcement connects it to something even bigger: the UK’s first small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) is planned for the Wylfa site.
The government sees a strategic benefit in locating an AI Zone near a potential clean-energy powerhouse. These reactors (possibly up to 8 units) might provide reliable, high-capacity energy to AI data centres, addressing one of the sector’s major bottlenecks.

Each AI Growth Zone will get £5 million, particularly to help:

Combined with the SMR project, today’s announcement brings 6,500 jobs to North Wales, ranging from construction to high-paying AI research posts.
Government officials claim the plan is part of a larger Modern Industrial Strategy to “make AI work for Britain.” Companies such as Google, Arm, and ElevenLabs have already expressed their strong support.
