WhatsApp Rolls Out AI-Powered ‘Writing Help’ to Rephrase and Refine Messages

WhatsApp has introduced an AI feature named “Writing Help” which has been designed to assist users in improving the tone, clarity, and style of their chat messages.

This new tool allows users to rephrase, proofread, or adjust the tone of their messages within the app.

The Key Features of Writing Help

Users can generate alternative versions of their messages in various styles, such as professional, funny, supportive, or simply rephrased.

For example, a message like “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa” can be humorously rewritten as:

  • “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard.”
  • “Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch. Please move them.”
  • “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”

Writing Help is accessed via a pencil icon within the message draft window in WhatsApp.

Privacy and Technology

  • The Writing Help feature is powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology and it ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read users’ original messages or suggestions.
  • This approach also maintains user privacy while delivering AI assistance.

Availability and Rollout

Initially, Writing Help was launched in English and is available in select countries starting the rollout week of August 28, 2025.

WhatsApp also aims to keep users within its ecosystem by providing built-in AI capabilities instead of depending on external tools like ChatGPT.

Reception and Criticism of The Writing Help

While the tool is expected to appeal to users needing help with drafting emails or professional texts, some critics argue that many users prefer the authenticity of their personal conversations.

The impact on everyday messaging remains to be seen, especially around the balance of AI assistance and genuine personal expression.

This feature marks a continuing trend of integrating AI tools directly into popular messaging platforms to enhance user experience and productivity.
