UK’s Most Powerful AI Supercomputer “Isambard AI” Goes Live

The United Kingdom launched its most powerful AI supercomputer known as Isambard AI, marking an important turning point in the country’s technical history.

This cutting-edge supercomputer was unveiled at the Bristol Centre for Supercomputing and it provides a massive boost in computing capability to UK researchers, corporations and public services.

A Leap Forward in UK’s AI Capability

The supercomputer which was named after the legendary 19th-century engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel shares his desire to transform Britain’s future. Isambard AI is supported by a £225 million government investment and was created by the University of Bristol in collaboration with Nvidia and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Isambard AI also has 5,448 Nvidia Grace Hopper Superchips and can execute 21 quintillion computations per second.

This makes it not only the fastest supercomputer in the UK but also one of the most energy efficient, ranking fourth internationally due to innovative cooling systems and zero-carbon energy.

Applications That Matter

Isambard AI is already powering efforts to improve healthcare, sustainability and scientific research.

It also enables early cancer detection using MRI scans, customised NHS care, sustainable material discovery and real-time aid for dementia patients.

In addition, Isambard AI allows for research into huge language models customised to UK languages such as Welsh.

A Sustainable and Fast Build

Surprisingly, the supercomputer was created in less than two years while the modular data centre took only 48 hours.

Sustainability is essential and heat-reuse technology helps to lessen its environmental impact.

Looking Ahead

Isambard AI which is managed by UK government bodies will be available to a diverse spectrum of researchers and companies, contributing to the UK’s continued leadership in AI and high-performance computing.

It is a critical component of the government’s larger goal of developing national AI infrastructure to support public services, scientific innovation, and economic prosperity.

The Isambard AI launch marks a major step towards Britain’s AI-powered future, one in which advanced computing opens up new ones.
